G2 Curriculum Update: April 27th

Reading: This week students will continue learning about Author's Craft. They will focus on how to think about the meaning of literary language through poems. Next, students will observe how author's use punctuation, font, and capitalization to make stories come to life. Finally, they will try and discover why an author ends a story a certain way. 

Writing: This week we will continue to write letters about topics the students choose.  The students will work on adding strong conclusions, using transition words to explain their reasons, and editing for punctuation.


Math: We will continue to solve MONEY problems using coins and bills! This week students will learn how to use different strategies to make ONE DOLLAR and make change from one dollar bill!


Grammar/Word Study: This will be the final week of studying the -er and -est spelling rules in word study.  In grammar the focus will continue to be on subject/verb agreement.

Social Studies:
 
Students learn what it means to be a good shopper!
• Identify habits of a good shopper.
• Distinguish between needs and wants.
• Analyze advertised prices to plan a budget-based shopping trip.
• Decide which product to buy based on comparison of features and prices.

Português: Nessa semana, os alunos irão ler, ouvir e assistir histórias, para assim continuar ampliando seu repertório sobre Contos de Fadas. Também trabalharão com o Livro de Historinhas. Além disso, farão algumas atividades referentes às características dos Contos de Fadas.

PAL: Students will do activities on the Timi 1 and on the Timi 2 books. In reading, students will have an assigned reading at Elefante Letrado.

G2 Curriculum Update: April 22nd

Reading: This week students will explore how authors use language to craft stories by investigating how authors use precise words and literary language to help create vivid pictures for their readers. 

Writing: This week we will begin to explore how we write opinions about topics other than books.  They will brainstorm different topics they could have opinions about and reasons that would support their opinions.


Math: Problem Solving with Coins and Bills!

KEY VOCABULARY:  One Penny = 1 cent/ One Nickel = 5 cents/ One Dime = 10 cents/ One Quarter = 25 cents.
·         Bar Graph: Diagram showing data using lines or rectangles of equal width
·         Data: Facts assembled for analysis or information
·         Degree: Unit of temperature measure
·         Foot: ft., unit of length measure, equal to 12 inches
·         Inch: in., unit of length measure
·         Legend: Notation on a graph explaining what symbols represent
·         Line Plot: Graph representing data with an X above each instance of value on a number line

·         Picture graph: Representation of data like a bar graph, using pictures instead of bars
How can you help at home:
·         Once your child has learned a few ways of representing data, find something around the house you can make a line or bar graph about, e.g., types of stuffed animals, colors of LEGO pieces, favorite books, etc.


Grammar/Word Study: The students will continue to learn about suffixes this week in word study.  In grammar the focus will be subject/verb agreement.

Social Studies:
 Due to the short week there will not be a social studies lesson this week.

PAL: Due to the short week, students will have the time to finish work undone and listen to a book being read aloud to them by the teacher.

G2 Curriculum Update: April 13th, 2020

Reading: This week students will be moving from learning about characters to author's craft. They will try and analyze how the author paints a picture with words by looking for the craft moves of sound words, small actions, dialogue, and setting. They will also look more into author's word choice and try and find words they didn't know before. 

Writing: This week the students will continue to work on adding more reasons to support their opinions.  They will also focus on the introduction and conclusion of their letters.  At the end of the week the students will have the chance to share one letter with third grade students through Flipgrid.


Math: NEW UNIT!! MODULE 7: 
Problem Solving with Length, Money and Data
This module presents an opportunity for students to practice addition and subtraction strategies within 100. They also use problem-solving skills as they learn to work with various types of units within the contexts of length, money and data. Students will represent categorical and measurement data using picture graphs, bar graphs and line plots.

Grammar/Word Study: The students will continue to explore how we use suffixes to change the meaning of words.  They will also learn more modals to help with their persuasive writing.

Social Studies:
 WHO PROVIDES SERVICES IN A COMMUNITY? Many people have jobs where they make things. Other people have jobs where they help, or “serve,” others. These jobs are services. Students understand that people who provide services in the community sometimes make things, too, such as meals in a restaurant. Students will learn that the services people provide are important to the community. They help keep the community healthy, safe, and happy.

PortuguêsNessa semana, vamos começar a unidade sobre Contos de Fadas. Os alunos irão ler, ouvir e assistir histórias. Também irão usar o Flipgrid para registrar suas ideias.

PALThis week, students will do activities from their book TIMI in google form and also read in Elefante Letrado.

G2 Curriculum Update: April 6th, 2020

Reading: Students are finishing up understanding characters by making more predictions with evidence and learning about characters relationships. Students will see how characters will act differently around other characters just like people do. 

Writing: Students will continue to work on the goal they set for themselves last week from the opinion writing checklist.  They will also learn how to write about more than one part of the book, and how to gather more evidence to support their opinions.


Math: This week we will end Module 6! Students will continue to explore the meaning of even and odd numbers, learning various interpretations and relating these findings to addition. Students will discover that doubles facts yield even numbers, even when the number being doubled is not even!


Grammar/Word Study: This week the students will begin to learn what a suffix is and how we use suffixes.  They will also study how modals can help make their writing more persuasive.

Social Studies: 
This week we will focus on goods and services and how that can relate to needs and wants. Students will start to think about goods and services they could provide to benefit others. 

PortuguêsNo trabalho de Português desta semana, os alunos irão usar o livro “Como fazer um livro de historinhas” para escrever histórias. Além disso, no Elefante Letrado, irão escolher um livro para ler, fazer as atividades propostas e gravar a leitura.

PALThis week, students will learn vocabulary related to parts of the house and they will also have some reading activities in google form.
