Teamwork in 2A

2A's year is off to a great start!  We spent a lot of time these first weekw talking about our hopes and goals for the year, how we can use the Eagle Way to help us achieve those goals, and what we want our classroom environment to feel like. These conversations help us to set a productive and happy tone for the year.

As part of these conversations the second graders completed an exercise on group work.  The students worked in groups to find numbers on a page in an organized and efficient manner.  The groups had three chances to find as many numbers as they could in three minutes, and after each try they spoke with their group mates to make a plan to work together even better.  At the end of the activity the students made a list of what Eagle Way group work looks like, feels like, and sounds like.

We look forward to keeping this enthusiasm and excitement up all year!

Lower School Update - August 19, 2019

Back to School Night

All parents are invited to our Back to School Night on Thursday, August 29. During the evening, you will visit your child’s classroom and meet the teacher. Our specialist and Portuguese teachers will also be available to chat. The schedule for the evening will be sent out later this week. 

Room Parent 101

On Friday morning, we will meet with all room parents for the 2019-20 school year (each classroom will have one parent assigned to this role). This training will provide our volunteers with some guidance of the roles and responsibilities of the room parent. Thank you to those parents willing to help out in this special way!

“How Was School Today?”

Graded has recently begun to focus on the Science of Learning and one powerful tool for deep learning is reflection.  Often times, when children return home from school, parents ask “How was school today?” Instead of this question that might only get a one-word response, here is an article with lots of questions to ask which will get your child thinking, reflecting and sharing with you.

Just a reminder that children who do not take the bus are to be picked up promptly after school. If the child remains on campus, they must be directly supervised by an adult. If not with an adult, they may go to the Lower School Library or the Lower School Office where there is supervision until 4:00 pm.

Homework in Grade Two

Homework in Grade Two

Dear Families,

Our year is off to a great start! This week marks our first week of homework. Second grade students will

receive a homework packet each Monday in their homework folder, along with any additional

communication from the school. The homework is then due on Friday, or on shortened weeks, on the

last day of the week.  As we know all families have different schedules, this will allow your family to

make a plan about how to distribute the homework throughout the week to best fit your needs. Students

are expected to return their homework and any other forms inside of their yellow homework folder on

Fridays unless other due dates are specified. Students are not expected to return their homework folder

to school on a daily basis.

Each week students will be expected to read for a minimum of 20 minutes at least four days during the

week. This reading can be in English, Portuguese, and/or in the child’s mother tongue language. It can

be done with a paper book or online on RAZ Kids. Beginning next week, we will ask students to read at

least one book on the RAZ Kids website and to take the quiz with this title each week.  In addition to

reading, students may receive math assignments on the Mathletics website, and/or math, writing,

science, or social studies activities that help give students opportunities to make connections between

what they are learning and their life outside of school. Homework will be tailored to meet the needs of

each student, and different students may receive different pieces of homework or different online

assignments depending on their needs. The homework is never meant to be a stressor for the child,

and please contact your child’s teacher if your child is finding the homework unmanageable.  Homework

assignments will be explained in class before being sent home. If your child has a question about their

homework please help your child foster their independence by speaking to their teacher themselves

first.

As we continue to build our grade two routines in the coming weeks you will receive the login

information for different online programs that Graded subscribes to, as well as instructions on how

these programs can be used.  Additionally, we will speak about homework routines and online

subscriptions at our open house on August 29th.

Welcome to all new students to Graded, and welcome back to those that are returning. Last week was a great week of introductions to new grade levels and classes. We are excited for the year ahead!

You’ll also find book recommendations and more. Don’t miss the cool new changes to our library catalog, Destiny Discover.  There are lots of new features that make searching easier for kids. 

We’ve been getting lots of emails from students working on the Reading World Cup! Great job everyone! Booklets should be turned in to homeroom teachers by August 14. 

I hope your family had a great time reading over the vacation. We still have over 800 books checked out from before vacation, and would love to have those books back for other students to use. Please return past checkouts and get more books! Feel free to stop by Monday or Tuesday (Aug. 12-13)  for our preview days of all of the amazing new books. 

Twelve Tips to Help Your Child Adjust to School

After a break adjusting to the routine of school can take longer for some children. This article gives some tips for parents to help with the adjustment to school. The suggestions are beneficial for both younger and older children.

Lower School Update - June 3, 2019

June 7 Dismissal Time
Our last day of the school year is Friday, June 7. Dismissal will take place at 11:30 am. Buses will leave at 11:45 am.

With last Friday’s universal due date, we currently have 515 books overdue. Please help get them all back to the library for other students to enjoy! Returning families with everything checked in will be able to check out a total of 10 books for vacation. If you are in S.P., we'll be open every Monday during break from 9-11 am and 1-3 pm.

Winter Clothing Collection

Join us in donating clothing this week for children and adults in need. Boxes are located around the Lower School to drop your gently used clothing off.
