Homework in Grade Two

Dear Families,

Our year is off to a great start! This week marks our first week of homework. Second grade students will

receive a homework packet each Monday in their homework folder, along with any additional

communication from the school. The homework is then due on Friday, or on shortened weeks, on the

last day of the week.  As we know all families have different schedules, this will allow your family to

make a plan about how to distribute the homework throughout the week to best fit your needs. Students

are expected to return their homework and any other forms inside of their yellow homework folder on

Fridays unless other due dates are specified. Students are not expected to return their homework folder

to school on a daily basis.

Each week students will be expected to read for a minimum of 20 minutes at least four days during the

week. This reading can be in English, Portuguese, and/or in the child’s mother tongue language. It can

be done with a paper book or online on RAZ Kids. Beginning next week, we will ask students to read at

least one book on the RAZ Kids website and to take the quiz with this title each week.  In addition to

reading, students may receive math assignments on the Mathletics website, and/or math, writing,

science, or social studies activities that help give students opportunities to make connections between

what they are learning and their life outside of school. Homework will be tailored to meet the needs of

each student, and different students may receive different pieces of homework or different online

assignments depending on their needs. The homework is never meant to be a stressor for the child,

and please contact your child’s teacher if your child is finding the homework unmanageable.  Homework

assignments will be explained in class before being sent home. If your child has a question about their

homework please help your child foster their independence by speaking to their teacher themselves

first.

As we continue to build our grade two routines in the coming weeks you will receive the login

information for different online programs that Graded subscribes to, as well as instructions on how

these programs can be used.  Additionally, we will speak about homework routines and online

subscriptions at our open house on August 29th.
