G2 Curriculum Update: May 25th
**Please note that Friday, May 29th is a report card writing day for teachers. On this day the learning activities will be posted by Dr. Purcell and Ms. Jenn. There will be no class meetings on Friday, and homeroom teachers will not be available to answer questions on this day. If your child's individual meeting time needs to be changed you will be contacted by their teacher. Thanks for your understanding!
Reading: This week our students will be working on understanding poetic features. We will be exploring repetition, similes, and imagery.
Writing: Our poets continue to show creativity as they express a feeling through a specific event in their poetry. This week they will explore using repetition and similes to create a mood in their poems.
Math: Module 8: Fractions! Describe a whole by the number of equal parts including 2 halves, 3 thirds, and 4 fourths and also recognize that equal parts of an identical rectangle can have different shapes. Teachers will be assessing the students during their check-ins time this week.
Grammar/Word Study: This week in word study the second graders will continue to study homophones. There will be no grammar lesson this week.
Science: Students investigate the properties of insulators in their attempts to keep cups of water from freezing, and once frozen, to keep them from melting.
Português: Nessa semana, os alunos realizarão leituras no Elefante Letrado e escreverão um Conto de Fadas usando brinquedos como personagens, para se prepararem para a escrita final de seu Conto de Fadas.

Art Class LIVE!

Hello 2nd Grade Artists!
Please join me today at 1pm for an Art class LIVE!
Come prepared with a piece of cadboard (an empty cereal box, or any other smaller box- soap, toothpaste box) and a pair of scissors.
We will work together for about 20 minues to make an Abstract Sculpture!

G2 Curriculum Update: May 18th
Reading: This is our last week of book clubs! Students will be learning how to debate and celebrating all their hard work. If you could please help us by sending a treat with them to their book clubs on Friday, May 22, we would all greatly appreciate it.
Writing: Our second grade poets are off to a great start with choosing poetry topics, describing their topic in a new or fresh way, and using line breaks to make their poetry sound like music. This week we will be focusing on choosing precise words, and how to edit your poems for spelling. The students will also learn more about using Google Slides, and how they can use color to help communicate their message.
Math: Module 8 - Continuation: Shapes, Fractions, and Equal Parts of Shapes!
Key Vocabulary:
Grammar/Word Study: This week in word study the second graders will study homophones. In grammar they will continue to focus on prepositions.
Science: MATTER! We will continue learning more about SOLIDS, LIQUIDS AND GASSES! Experiments and videos on the flipgrid will remain open this week!

G2 Curriculum Update: May 11th
Reading: Book clubs are off to a great start! We will be continuing practicing our discussion skills by talking about how problems and solutions can help students understand their characters, as well as reviewing author's craft of choosing endings.
Writing: The kids did an amazing job on their opinion videos! This week we will start our poetry writing unit. The kids will learn how poets see the world in a different way, how to choose a topic that is meaningful to them as poets, and how poets use line breaks to communicate their ideas.
Math: MODULE 8: Time, Shapes and Fractions as Equal Parts of Shapes
Grammar/Word Study: This week in word study the second graders will continue to study compound words. In grammar the focus will be on prepositions.
Science: Describe and classify a variety of objects according to observable physical properties or attributes. Continue to explore the 3 states of matter.
Português: Nessa semana, além de ler e gravar no Elefante Letrado, e fazer atividades no livro "Como fazer um livro de historinhas", os alunos farão algumas atividades referentes às características dos Contos de Fadas.

understanding of part-whole relationships through the lens of geometry. As
students compose and decompose shapes, they begin to develop an understanding
of unit fractions (fractions with one in the numerator) as equal parts of a
whole.

G2 Curriculum Update: May 4th
Reading: This week students will begin book clubs! They will be discussing predictions and character traits. Please make sure they are on time for their book club on Tuesday and Friday.
Writing: This week the students will work on creating a persuasive video. In this video they will read an opinion letter to other second graders. The students will use their words, technology, and props to try to persuade the other second graders to agree with their opinion.
Math: This week we will end Module 7!
Grammar/Word Study: This week in word study the second graders will continue to study compound words. In grammar the focus will be on countable nouns.
Science: Properties of matter! Our new topic!
Português: Nessa semana, os alunos farão algumas atividades referentes às características dos Contos de Fadas. Além disso, farão atividades no livro "Como fazer um livro de historinhas" e lerão um livro no Elefante Letrado.
PAL: Students will review the exercise and reading on the Elefante Letrado.
Writing: This week the students will work on creating a persuasive video. In this video they will read an opinion letter to other second graders. The students will use their words, technology, and props to try to persuade the other second graders to agree with their opinion.
Math: This week we will end Module 7!
Students will infer and draw conclusions from data. They will also discover that a table is
useful for organizing data, while a line plot allows for visual comparisons of
the data.
Science: Properties of matter! Our new topic!
- List observable properties of common materials, including color, texture, hardness, and flexibility.
