G2 Curriculum Update - February 7

Here is what is coming up in grade two:

Reading: The second graders are continuing to work on fluency in their reading, including reading to match a character's voice.  Additionally, they are working on identifying literary language, such as similes, in their reading. Once they have identified literary language, the students are working to figure out why the author included that type of language.

Writing: Our current writing unit is integrated with our science units.  As the students complete experiments they are using the scientific method to record the process and their thinking in a lab report.

Science:  Through modeled experiments, students have observed how natural disasters like Tsunamis can change the land.  Students are working to understand the different types of erosion that shape the earth quickly and slowly.  Some examples are wind and water.  Students will be conducting experiments to better understand the different types of erosion.

Math: Module 4 - Strategies for Decomposing a Ten
Key Vocabulary:
·        Minuend: A quantity or number from which another number is to be subtracted
·        Subtrahend: A quantity or number being subtracted from another
·        Difference: The solution to a subtraction problem
·        Place value: Referring to the unit value of each digit in a given number
·        Place Value Chart: A graphic organizer that students can use to see the coherence of place value and operations between different units.

Lost and Found
We consistently have a large amount of lost clothing and other items in our Lost and Found.  It would help tremendously if you would label your child’s items with first and last name. We would love to be able to identify the owners of these items. This especially applies to swim bags which are lost quite often.

Special Waiting Area
For students who are picked up by nannies and drivers, we have a special waiting area.  Upon being fingerprinted and registered in Veracross, family employees will pick up and drop off students in the Waiting Area, located in the Bus Parking Lot. Teachers of students in younger grades will walk these students to this area at the end of the school day.

Reader's Theater in 2A

In our reading unit the second graders have been exploring what it means to read with fluency.  They have worked on using punctuation to scoop words together, finding a just right reading pace, making their voice match the mood of the story, and speaking like characters.  Last week the students practiced these skills in a Reader's Theater play.  Today, the second graders presented their plays to their classmates.  Bravo, 2A!

Vocês estão de Volta!!!!
(You're back!)
After some restful time, it is great to have you all back!
And with a lot going on in D.Nati's Pal's class!

We began the year with the acclaimed Brazilian author, Monteiro Lobato, stories and characters study. The high point of this adventure journey through the Brazilian children's literature will be on February 18th, when we will visit the Sítio do Picapau Amarelo theme park.

Starting on Monday, February 3rd, D.Nati's PAL students will use PAL textbooks in classes to keep learning Portuguese. We will use the series Timi 1 & 2, by Isabel Borges, Martina Tirone & Teresa Goja.

These books will be checked out from our school's catalog and students will be responsible for them until the end of the school year  when these books are to be returned to the school. We are all very excited to offer these new learning resources, and to contribute
to students responsible care of school's property.
Thank you again for all your support!

Best regards,

D.Nati
