Summer Holiday Activities

Dear 1st-Grade Families,

It has been a wonderful semester! As you prepare for the holidays, consider the following ideas for continuing learning at home, or on the road as you travel!

Reading: Please read every day! You may choose to join the "LS Reads" initiative by reading Flora & Ulysses, which is available for free on Tumblebooks.com (Username: Graded, password: books) We've enjoyed reading Chapter 1 in class together! This is a fun book for you to continue to read as a family together.

If you need some book recommendations while on break, here is a great recommended book list. Don't forget to log-in to Raz-kids.com to read loads of "just right books".

Writing: Please continue to practice your writing over the summer holiday. Here are some recommendations of what you and your child can do over break:
  • Keep a journal sharing about your most memorable holiday experiences (pictures are also encouraged).
  • For those traveling: write post cards to grandparents, and even back to school, sharing a highlight of your trip.
  • Help with meals by writing the grocery list.

Math: Students may work on Mathletics.com. They should practice their math skills 2-4 times per week during the holidays. A couple of areas in math to review:
  • Continue practicing addition and subtraction facts to 10
  • It is important for Math to come alive in everyday situations. Please refer to this site for ideas on how to make mathematical thinking visible to your child.

Love,
The First Grade Teachers
