G2 Curriculum Update - January 21st

Dear Second Grade Families,

Happy New Year!  We are so excited to be back in school and starting our second semester with your child.  Here is what is coming up in Grade Two.

Reading: With the new year we are beginning our new reading unit.  We will return to fiction reading, and start by focusing on fluency. Students will work on reading a book accurately and with a voice that matches what is happening in the story.

Writing: Our students will be learning to write as scientists, focusing on how we write up a lab report to go with a science experiment.

Social Studies: Our students will be reviewing what they learned about Maps, such as a legend and compass rose. They will work on using technology and google maps to discover more of how maps can help with directions and learning about the world.

Science: Students will continue to with ``The Changing Earth`` unit.  In the last activity they learned about maps.  Students will now use the mapping program, Google Earth to view satellite images and pictures of the entire world.  They will be exploring where water is located on Earth and determine whether it exists as solid ice or in liquid form.

Math: Module 4 - Strategies for Decomposing a Ten
Key Vocabulary:
·        Minuend: A quantity or number from which another number is to be subtracted
·        Subtrahend: A quantity or number being subtracted from another
·        Difference: The solution to a subtraction problem
·        Place value: Referring to the unit value of each digit in a given number
·        Place Value Chart: A graphic organizer that students can use to see the coherence of place value and operations between different units.

Returning to School
We hope your family had a fantastic break and we are excited to see students on Tuesday!  We know it’s often hard for students to return to school when they’ve enjoyed sleeping late, lots of fun activities and spending time with family and friends.  Here is an article to help smooth the transition with tips for a successful start to the second semester.

Access Control
Students in pre-primary to Grade 3 will receive their access control badges at school on Tuesday, January 21.  It’s important to make sure that it stays connected to your child’s backpack to easily allow entrance to our campus every day. We will have teachers in the Student Center ready to walk our youngest students to class.

Please expect full implementation of the access control system on Wednesday, January 22.

Swimming
Just a reminder that swimming for some classes starts tomorrow!  Please check communication from your child’s teacher.

PAL Updates - Vacation Reading

Dear Parents

Pal 2nd grade students have chosen books from the class library for their individual reading during the school break. This is meant to motivate students to keep their contact with Portuguese while they're away. Feel free to join your child in this reading and enjoy the reading. These books are to be returned to our class during the first week of classes in January.

Have a great break!
