G2 Curriculum Update: March 30th, 2020

Dear Second Grade Parents,

Here is what is coming up in our distance learning plan this week:

Reading: Students are continuing to learn how to become experts on characters in a series. They are discovering how to compare how the character is the same or different in the series, to gather more information by thinking about what they say, and do and finally predict what will happen in another series book. They also are working how to discuss characters using evidence, as well as responding to their peers by adding more information about the same topic.

Writing: Students will confer with their teacher about their opinion writing letter this week.  Students will also use transition words to organize their ideas, and use a checklist to set goals for themselves as writers.

Math: Students further develop their understanding as they build arrays.  An array is made of horizontal rows and vertical columns.  Students can then use them to write equations showing repeated addition.

4 rows of 3:  3+3+3+3=12
Students will determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members, e.g..by pairing objects or counting them by 2's.
Students will write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends.

Grammar/Word Study: Students will continue to review adverbs and adjectives to help them describe their characters

Social Studies: This week we will focus on goods and services and how that can relate to needs and wants.

Portugues: No trabalho de Português desta semana, os alunos do 2nd grade farão a leitura e interpretação de um texto. Além disso, no Elefante Letrado, irão escolher um livro para ler, fazer as atividades propostas e gravar a leitura.

PAL: Students will Review exercises about verbs and vocabulary and do Independent reading.

Zoom Class Rules

Dear Parents,
We are sharing these rules with students this week.  It's important for us all to remember that Zoom classes are the same as classes at Graded.  We have rules for both to ensure a positive learning environment for all. Please take time to discuss these with your child(ren) and what they look like in action in your home.
Thank you!

Distance Learning em Português

Prezados Pais,

Estamos animadas para iniciar a nossa jornada online. Temos certeza de que, tanto nós professoras, quanto nossos alunos e os Srs Pais, continuaremos aprendendo e nos divertindo juntos e com sucesso.
Conforme já compartilhado pela escola, nosso schedule prevê que as tarefas de Português para a semana serão postadas toda segunda-feira, às 13:00 horas, nas Google Classrooms de seus filhos. (a mesma do Homeroom).
            Atenciosamente,

Equipe de Português do 2nd  grade

G2 Curriculum Update: March 23rd, 2020

Dear Second Grade Parents,

Here is what is coming up in our distance learning plan this week:

Reading: Students are going to be learning about characters in series books. F
irst they are going to identify the main character and try to learn about some of the character's personality traits. Next they will discover how the character responds to problems. They will have the opportunity to try these skills with the teacher using the Tommy Tales series on Raz-kids and then each student will practice on their own. They can choose series books from online or books that they have at home.

Writing: We are beginning our new opinion writing unit this week.  Students will talk and write about their opinions of books they have read.  This week students will explore different aspects of books, such as the characters, favorite parts, pictures, titles, and lessons.

Grammar/Word Study: To go with our character unit in reading this week the students will review adjectives and adverbs.

Math: FOUNDATIONS OF MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION

How can you help at home:
*Practice skip counting by 2s. This will help as students work with odd and even numbers in this module.
*Challenge your child to sort any number of small objects into equal groups.
*Your child can learn to organize a set of objects into equal groups and then into rows and columns, or rectangular arrays. They use math drawings to analyze the relationship between rows and columns (e.g., 3 rows of 4 or 4 columns of 3) and to model the array as the sum of equal addends (e.g., 4 + 4 + 4 = 12).

Social Studies: This week we will begin our new economy unit!  The students will learn the difference between needs and wants.

Portugues: Nessa primeira semana trabalhando online, os alunos irão ler livros na plataforma Elefante Letrado, assistir histórias, gravar um vídeo no Flipgrid e comentar 2 vídeos dos colegas.

PAL: On the first week working online, PAL students will
do some assigned activities in Quizlet, record a video and read a book in Elefante Letrado.

Personal Safety

Personal Safety
The Lower School Counselors will be delivering classroom lessons on Personal Safety. The information presented will be developmentally appropriate in content and concepts.  This curriculum will teach children the difference between safe touch and unsafe touch. They will learn the anatomically correct names for body parts, and that these parts of the body should never be touched by others except to keep one clean and healthy.

Students will be encouraged to identify adults in their lives within the home and community that they could talk to if the “touching rule” is ever broken.  The students will learn how to say no in a “big voice”, how to run away and tell a trusted adult.

At Graded we realize that these lessons are just a small piece of what we all need to do to keep children safe. Research shows that young children retain skills when they are practiced and reinforced at home so please help your child review her/his learning by asking questions at home and reminding your child about safe and unsafe touch.

If you have questions or would like further information, please feel free to reach out to Bobbie at bobbie.olio@graded.br, or Kevin kevin.kooienga@graded.br.  Thank you for the continued support to keep all children safe both inside and outside the school setting.

Regards,
Bobbie and Kevin
