Lower School Update - January 28, 2019

The Eagle’s Nest
Two classes were awarded the Golden G award today for demonstrating the Eagle Way the past week. Congratulations to Ms. Keane’s first grade class and Ms. Kitto’s fifth grade class!

Eagle Way Tip of the Week
Our core value for the months of January and February is Intellectual Curiosity, simply defined as “wanting to know more”.  According to The Character Lab, curiosity is important because,

“When you’re curious about something, you process it deeply, rather than superficially. You also voluntarily spend more time learning about things that spark your curiosity. As a result, you more readily remember what you learn. In general, people who are more curious are happier and better liked.”

Here are  few articles from the Parent Toolkit website about encouraging curiosity at home:

100th Day of School!!!!

Can you believe that students have almost completed 100 days of school? On Monday, February 11th our class will be celebrating the 100th day of first grade! To mark this special day, students are required to create a 100th Day project at home and bring it to school by February in order for it to be displayed in the 100th Day Museum outside of the classroom. Parents are welcome to drop by at the beginning or end of the school day to check out all of the amazing projects!

Completed projects should show how students counted their 100 items by making groups of 2s, 5s, 10s, 25s, etc. Examples include:
  • a beaded necklace
  • a paper clip chain
  • a list of favorite books
  • math facts
  • buttons
For more ideas go to: http://www.vickiblackwell.com/100th.html
Here are a few examples from previous years:

Ideas for At Home Activities Related to 100 Days:

Tell number stories related to 100. For example: How many people would it take to have a total of 100 fingers? How many people would it take to have a total of 100 eyes? How many cars would it take to have a total of 100 wheels?

Find out what major world events happened 100 years ago. Share facts about everyday life during that time. Ask children to make predictions about life 100 years from now. Children can write and illustrate their predictions.

Have children count 100 days from today on a calendar at home. Have them discuss with a family member what they might be doing 100 days from now and draw a picture. What month will it be? What season of the year?
